The high winds whistling through hear rainbow mane, and robin's blue ears was enough to drown out the sound of her crying. As she blasted through the sky faster than anypony else ever could, she continued to pick apart every last one of her faults.
"Why am I like this? Why am I so weird? Why do I have to be different?"
She wanted to fight it. She wanted to force herself into being content with exactly the way she already was, because that's what any normal pony would do. As she continued to cry, her hooves trembling with both emotion, and the resistance of the atmosphere around her, she repeated a single phrase between her teeth.
"I am a mare. I am a mare. I am a mare."
Somehow, reinforcing the false truth made her feel a little better, more at ease. She touched down in front of Rarity's boutique. If she was going to be a mare, then she was going to act like one.
She stepped in, looking around a seemingly empty shop. She slowly hovered around, studying each piece with more attention than she had ever given them in the past.
"Who would ever want to wear something so girly?" She thought to herself.
"Oh right. I would." The lie shook through her in defeat.
She continued looking around the shop, looking for Rarity.
"Rarity!" She called out. "Are you home?"
It didn't take long for Rarity to respond. She was hard at work in the back room. "Ooh! A visitor!"
She sprang into front of the shop, doing her best to look her best. Eyes still closed, she recited the usual.
"Welcome to Carousel Boutique, where every garment is chic, unique, and magnifique!"
She gleamed her eyes open with her famous, traffic-stopping smile, only to realize it wasn't a real visitor; just Rainbow Dash.
"Oh, hello darling," she said with a hint of disappointment, "What can I do for you?"
Surely Rainbow was just there to show off some new trick, or otherwise put her delicate designs in jeopardy with her aerial acrobatics.
Rainbow landed down in front of Rarity, folding down her wings to either side. And, that's when she said something Rarity would have never expected.
"Rarity, I want to place an order for a dress."
Rarity, although quite surprised, was giddy with excitement of the thought of Rainbow Dash finally coming to her senses.
"A dress?" Rarity repeated.
Dash rolled her eyes, allowing them to settle into a glare. "Yes, I want a dress. That is what you do right, make dresses?"
"Wow, she's serious," Rarity thought. "But of course darling! If you're looking for a dress, then you've come to the right place!"
Rarity wasted no time at all in fetching a pen and paper. "Now, I'll just need to know what you're looking for in a dress. What sort of style? Color? What are you going to use it for?"
All of her detailed, yet pointless questions meant nothing to Dash.
"I don't care. Just make it as frilly and girly as possible."
